Advancing Malawi’s Health Workforce

The Malawi Ministry of Health is committed to implementing proven strategies to curb the HIV/AIDS epidemic, such as rolling out Test and Start and adopting the 90-90-90 objectives for epidemic control. However, an acute shortage of critical health workers is a major constraint to the achievement of these objectives. With only 28 nurses and two physicians per 100,000 population, Malawi is among the 57 countries with a crisis in human resources for health (HRH). Extreme resource constraints further aggravate the situation, making the Malawian health system fragile and in need of support to achieve established health and HIV/AIDS goals.

HRH2030 in Malawi

With support from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), HRH2030 works in Malawi to address central-level systems bottlenecks that impede effective HRH planning, forecasting, training, recruitment, deployment, retention, and data generation and use. Through the Malawi activity, the program also enhances the Ministry of Health’s workforce through salary support to the Ministry to recruit and deploy additional frontline health workers at PEPFAR priority service delivery points.
