August 2019: Leave No One Behind

Dear Colleagues,

As I write this, the UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is just a few weeks away; the UN General Assembly convenes on September 23 under the theme “Universal Health Coverage: Moving Together to Build a Healthier World.” One of the “Key Asks” for this meeting, is “Leave No One Behind.” On Twitter, looking at #LeaveNoOneBehind reveals the great diversity of players in our global community who are advocating for UHC: government representatives, funding agencies, development agencies, NGOs, health group alliances, civil society activists—and people like you and me. All of us basically saying, “Now is the time: EVERYONE deserves health care.”

Let’s consider the “Leave No One Behind” mantra as we look at our stories in this month’s HRH2030 Highlights. A dedicated Malian midwife is making sure that all women in her community have access to the health information they need; changemakers in Colombia are coming together to advocate for the well-being of children; an online e-learning platform will reach health workers throughout the 7,000+ islands of the Philippines to ensure high-quality care in even the most remote areas; health workers, better supported through enhanced supervision, can provide higher quality services; and in times of crisis—including infectious disease outbreaks—a well-trained health workforce will ensure everyone gets the care they need.

Whether we are focusing on health workers’ empowerment, amplifying the voices of our youth, or expanding health education and training, HRH2030 will continue to be inclusive in our efforts to strengthen health systems worldwide. We remain committed to “Leave No One Behind.”

Warm regards,
