05 Mar IWD 2021: Challenging Biases for a More Equal Health Sector
Through our work supporting the health workforce and strengthening health systems, HRH2030 understands that empowering women brings increased health, education, and economic stability to their families and their communities. We have also witnessed how gender biases and power inequities make women and men, as care providers or patients, experience the health sector differently. We can see it in the lack of female representation in health sector leadership positions; we also see it when gender norms, roles, and expectations impede women’s access to services or their ability to make decisions about their own health. As we know, women make up the majority of the world’s health and social workers, so they have a crucial role in keeping us healthy. Working to empower them and to support them is also working to advance health for all.
In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8, we are participating in this year’s #ChooseToChallenge campaign, because when we challenge the status quo, change can happen. We asked our HRH2030 colleagues to share their thoughts on how to challenge harmful gender biases so that together, we can build stronger, more gender-equal health and social service sectors.
