12 Nov Increasing Site-Level Staffing Levels: Does It Improve Site Performance?
In 2017, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in Malawi received funding for the recruitment and deployment of health workers to selected PEPFAR priority sites located in areas with the highest HIV/AIDS burden. This was a welcome initiative in a nation working to combat new HIV/AIDS cases while burdened by health system challenges. For one, a lack of health workers was hampering efforts to start and retain HIV positive people on antiretroviral therapy. Through the deployment of the PEPFAR-supported health workers, the number of health workers providing HIV/AIDS care and treatment was expected to increase, thereby improving the availability, utilization, and quality of HIV/AIDS services in the supported sites and enhancing HIV/AIDS and health outcomes overall. Was the deployment successful?
This report outlines research that was conducted to assess the initial extent to which the intended results of the PEPFAR-supported health worker deployment were achieved and to draw lessons to increase the impact of current and future HRH investments in Malawi.
